Hospitality Sector Gas Detection Safety Check

PAC Group support the hospitality sector in Northern Ireland by slashing the cost of Gas Detection Safety Checks.

Lockdown measures are being eased and Northern Ireland’s hospitality sector can begin to re-open from July 3rd 2020. Pubs, bars, restaurants, hotels, and cafes across the province will spend the next couple of weeks putting health and safety measures in place to ensure good social distancing practices and to create a safe space for their customers and employees.

The safe operation and condition of on-site gas detection systems should be a key consideration for the sector before re-opening.

PAC Group’s Gas Detection Manager, Mark Whitehead, said:

“Re-starting operations after a prolonged period of closure can result in a range of problems in fixed gas detection systems, including leaks of toxic or flammable gases, incorrect pressurisation of systems, and maintenance issues that result in extraction systems no longer working effectively or efficiently.”

A wide range of industry sectors use gas detection systems, such as manufacturing facilities, leisure centres and swimming pools, schools and colleges, and – of course – the hospitality sector. While COVID-19 has had a detrimental impact on the global and local economy, the hospitality sector in Northern Ireland has been particularly hard hit, and PAC Group would like to do what we can to help.

The safe operation of gas detection systems should form part of a reopening Risk Assessment. While we tend to associate gas detection systems to businesses operating in the manufacturing and industrial sectors, the systems are widely used – and are often a legal requirement – within many businesses in the hospitality sector.

Common gases used within the hospitality industry include nitrogen (N2) and carbon dioxide (CO2). While these gases are naturally present in the atmosphere, they are at very low concentrations. Leaks from gas canisters or equipment can result in elevated levels in the air, which is especially dangerous in confined spaces, such as store rooms and cellars.

For example, CO2 is a colourless, tasteless, and odourless gas with a density that is 5x heavier than air. This means pockets of silent and deadly CO2 can gather low on the ground and gradually increase in size. In normal conditions, CO2 represents 0.04% of clean air. An increase to 2% can cause headaches and difficulty breathing, an increase to 5% can cause dizziness, confusion, and respiratory distress, and an increase to 7% can kill in just 5 minutes.
